We welcomed our Ranger Scouts (2-4 year old children) and their parents to our first story time of 2019. While it was a small group we had a lot of fun. We read the 2 books I am reading this week to my classes, Snowie Rolie and Snowmen at Night. I also included another book, Winter is Here. The children also had a chance to create the word snow out of marshmallows. (We ate a bunch of marshmallows too!) Finally, we played with "snow." The snow was made of frozen baking soda and tap water. The recipe I had said 2 cups of baking soda to 1 cup of water, but it was more like 1/2 to 3/4 a cup of water to 2 cups of baking soda. It was such a hit that I made more and shared it with 2 classes.

It is hard to believe that we have already begun the 2019 part of our school year. One of my new goals is to actually post on this site more. This week, we are reading snow related books. I know that SC, especially the Midlands, don't receive lots of snow, but we can enjoy reading about it. 4K and Kindergarten are reading Snowie Rolie by William Joyce and 1st grade is reading Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner. These are 2 great books you should check out if you can!
We are already more than halfway through October. This school year is flying by! In 2nd grade we have been learning about clouds and weather in general. Now we are ready to move into Extreme Weather. We are going to try and make a tornado in a bottle, a snowstorm, and who knows what else over the next few week?
November is Picture Book Month, so take a moment to read a picture book to someone! Wow, September has really flown by! All of our students are checking out library books and the self check in and check out is really flowing along! Our first graders are about to begin checking out from the shelves again since we are finally back in the routine Hurricane Florence disrupted.
I am currently taking a class called Improving Reading Comprehension for Grades 4-8 and I am learning so much! Many of the strategies we are learning can be taught to children in lower grades as well. Today I decided to observe a 3rd grade class and they were talking about making predictions which is what my current lesson plan for class is about. It is great when things come together like that. We have a TON of new books for our book club section and to share with teachers in our Teacher's Resource area. Mrs. Anderson is prepping the books to be put out. Also, 3 copies of the new book in the Dogman series should be arriving today or tomorrow. I know the students will be super excited to check these out! Johnny Appleseed stoped by to visit with our Kindergarten Rangers and I was honored to host him in the Learning Commons. I learned a lot about Johnny, especially that he was born on September 26th, which is tomorrow!! Until next time! Hello everyone!
We are currently finishing up our upper grade Learning Commons orientations and are adjusting to the 6 day rotation. In addition to story time and reader advisory for students, I am happy to say I am teaching 2nd graders each day in Makerspace/Science. This is a new endeavor for me, but so far we are having a great time. I can't wait to post about it here. Please check in on the blog every so often so that you can see what we are up too. I will also be posting on our Facebook and Twitter pages, so please visit those as well! Until next time, here are a few tips for being a great reader: Book Habits for RCES Students 1. Treat our books well! 2. Keep our books in the same spot when they aren't being read. (We prefer their book bag, but other spots are okay as well) 3. Please do not read library books while eating or drinking. 4. Please do not take library books into the bathroom. 5. Return or renew books every 2 weeks. 6. Please let Mrs. Anderson or Mrs. Swygert know if your book is damaged when you return it. Hello everyone! This is Mrs. Swygert, the new librarian at Rocky Creek. Mrs. Love has moved to another school, and I am excited to continue her excellent programs and add a few touches of my own.
We are currently finishing up our upper grade Learning Commons orientations and are almost done with our 2nd week of story times with Kindergarten and 1st grade. Within the next few days, every student will have had a chance to check out a library book! We are so excited to have books in each student's hands to read! Book Habits for RCES Students 1.
